Champagne, Prosecco, And Sparkling Wine: What's The Difference?

Blog

When you have a special event like a wedding, an anniversary, or a special New Year's Eve planned, you probably want to get some nice wine to go with it. Generally, champagne is the drink of choice for those events. However, you want to make sure that you get what you want when you go to the store to buy champagne. Just because it has bubbles and sparkles doesn't mean that it's champagne.

Champagne

Although people tend to use the term for any bubbly wine, champagne is a very specific term. In order to be called champagne, there are a few requirements that have to be met. One is that it has to be produced in the Champagne region of France, which is south of Paris. Another is that it has to be made out of a combination of certain kinds of grapes. Those grapes are chardonnay, pinot meunier, or pinot noir. It also has to be made in something called the traditional method. The traditional method is a long process and can be very expensive. It includes two fermentations and disgorging.

Prosecco

Prosecco is Italy's answer to champagne. In order to be called prosecco, the sparkling wine has to be produced in the Veneto region of Italy. There is only one kind of grape that is used when making prosecco. That grape is the prosecco grape, which is also called the glera grape. Instead of the traditional method, prosecco wine is made with something called the tank method. The tank method skips some of the steps that the traditional method has and simplifies others. For example, prosecco still has a second fermentation, but instead of doing it in the bottle like the traditional method, in the tank method, the second fermentation takes places in a vat.

Sparkling Wine

Sparkling wine is the overall general term that encompasses any wine that has bubbles. However, the term is generally used when talking about a sparkling wine that it isn't champagne or prosecco, which opens it up to a wide range of wines from a lot of different places. The wines will taste different depending on what country they are made in and what kind of grape they are made from, so you can find something that you like.

If you want to have a nice wine to celebrate with, a sparkling wine is generally the traditional choice. Knowing the correct terms to call the wines can help you find the one you want.

Keep Your Home Bar Stocked Even if You Rarely Drink

My wife and I recently bought a new house in a new state, and it came with a large home bar in the basement. Being new to the neighborhood, we were excited when a nice neighbor decided to stop by one day for a drink... I was unprepared for his visit and only had a beer to give him. He casually mentioned he enjoyed scotch but that the beer would do for the moment. To his surprise, the next time he stopped by I had purchased a bottle of scotch to keep on hand just for his visits. He was grateful and we became great friends. I now keep a fully stocked bar and have a drink ready for anyone who swings by! I decided to start a blog to share what I have learned about cocktails and spirits.
